The story of the Traveling Wilburys is everything I love about music.

Here’s how it all went down according to a documentary I watched about the Wilburys - George Harrison was working on his solo album with Jeff Lynne producing. Roy Orbison happened to be over for dinner. They thought of the idea of doing a song together and said, “You know who’s got a studio at his house? Bob Dylan.” Dylan happened to be home and invited them over. Lynne (I swear I’m not making this up) left a guitar over at Tom Petty’s house and swung by to pick it up. He tagged along and they made “Handle With Care.” Instead of putting it on Harrison’s album, they decided to form a band.

To me, the thing that charms me the most about this fortuitous story is the fact that here are four of the most prolific artists in music history (and Jeff Lynne)* just starting up a band for the pure fun of it. Joy, ease, and friendship pours through every note of the first album. The Traveling Wilburys answer not only the question of HOW to make music, but WHY make music.
